Why York families call us

York families usually call us when a parent living alone in the city or a nearby township starts missing meals, medications or appointments, or comes home from WellSpan York Hospital or UPMC Memorial needing more help than the family can give. York is a working city, and many of the adult children we talk with work shifts, care for their own children and live 20 or 30 minutes away in Dover, Red Lion or across the Maryland line. The help they want is steady and practical: a caregiver in the morning for bathing and breakfast, someone to give medication reminders, company in the afternoon, and sometimes a person overnight. See overnight care.

Homes and neighborhoods in and around York

Inside the city, many older adults live in brick rowhouses on narrow lots, with steep, narrow staircases, the only full bathroom upstairs, and front steps right onto the sidewalk. Those houses can be very hard after a fall or surgery, and much of our work in the city is making them workable: a first-floor setup, help on the stairs morning and night, and safe bathing in a small bathroom. In the townships that ring the city, including Spring Garden, Springettsbury, York Township, West Manchester and Manchester, homes are more often ranch houses, split-levels and newer developments, where the challenge is distance and driving rather than stairs.

York is also a city where many families speak Spanish at home. If your parent is more comfortable in Spanish, tell us at the first call; language is one of the things we match on, and we will tell you honestly whether we can staff it for the hours you need. We also serve the suburbs that have their own pages, including East York, Shiloh and Weigelstown.

Coming home from WellSpan York Hospital or UPMC Memorial

York has two hospitals. WellSpan York Hospital is on South George Street at the edge of the city along the Spring Garden Township line and includes a Level I trauma center, and UPMC Memorial moved in 2019 to a new building on Innovation Drive in West Manchester Township. Either way, the first days home are when families need the most help. A caregiver can meet your parent at the house, help them settle, prepare a meal, give medication reminders from the discharge instructions and stay overnight, then help with bathing and get them to follow-up appointments during the week. Skilled nursing and therapy come from the home health agency the physician orders, and we work alongside it. We are independent and not affiliated with WellSpan Health or UPMC. How care starts in York

  1. Call (717) 695-2704. A care coordinator asks about your parent's day, the house and the hours you need covered.
  2. In-home consultation. York is about 25 miles from our office on I-83, so scheduling can take a little longer than the one to two business days typical around Harrisburg. Tell us about any discharge date right away.
  3. Written care plan covering the tasks, schedule and preferences, including language.
  4. Caregiver match. We serve York from our Harrisburg office and, when possible, match a caregiver who lives nearby in York County so travel is short and the same person keeps coming. Recurring shifts of a few hours are easier to staff than a single short visit.
  5. Ongoing check-ins and on-call support for active clients.

Paying for home care in York

York families use a mix of private pay, long-term care insurance, VA benefits and public programs, and Medicaid waiver programs are an important part of the picture here. Medicare does not pay for ongoing non-medical home care.

  • Community HealthChoices. If your parent has Medicaid and needs help with daily activities, CHC may pay for personal assistance at home through UPMC Community HealthChoices, PA Health & Wellness or AmeriHealth Caritas. We are an enrolled provider; your parent can choose any willing and qualified provider. See how Community HealthChoices works.
  • OPTIONS. Residents 60 and older can apply through the York County Area Agency on Aging at (717) 771-9610. There is no income limit; some people contribute on a sliding scale tied to income.
  • Long-term care insurance and VA benefits, with the care plan, notes and invoices they require.

Questions York families ask us

Do you provide senior care and in-home caregivers in York, PA?
Yes. We are a licensed, non-medical home care agency serving the city of York and nearby Spring Garden, Springettsbury, York Township, West Manchester and Manchester, plus East York, Shiloh and Weigelstown. Our office is in Harrisburg, and we match caregivers who live in York County when possible. Elderly care here includes personal care, dementia care, respite, overnights and 24-hour schedules. Call (717) 695-2704.
Can you help my parent come home from WellSpan York Hospital or UPMC Memorial?
Yes. Call as soon as the discharge date is known. A caregiver can meet your parent at home, help them settle, prepare a meal, give medication reminders from the discharge instructions and stay overnight if needed. Skilled nursing and therapy come from the home health agency the physician orders. We are independent and not affiliated with WellSpan Health or UPMC.
Can my parent in York get a caregiver who speaks Spanish?
Tell us at the first call. Language is one of the things we consider when matching a caregiver, along with needs, personality and location. Whether we can staff a Spanish-speaking caregiver depends on the hours and days you need, and we will tell you honestly what is possible before care begins.
Does Medicaid pay for home care in York County?
For eligible adults, yes, through Pennsylvania's Community HealthChoices program, which can pay for personal assistance services at home. Your parent applies through the Independent Enrollment Broker at 1-877-550-4227, then works with a service coordinator from their managed care plan. We are an enrolled provider, and your parent can choose any willing and qualified provider.
Can a caregiver help with the stairs in a York rowhouse?
Yes. Caregivers walk with clients on the stairs, help with transfers and bathing, and can stay overnight for bathroom trips. At the consultation we look at the stairs and bathroom and often suggest a first-floor routine. Physical therapy and home modifications come from other providers; the York County Area Agency on Aging can point you to home modification help.
