Why Lititz families call us

Lititz families usually call us when a parent wants to stay in town and the help they need has grown past what the family can give. Lititz has a strong pull: the walkable center around Broad and Main streets, Lititz Springs Park, the Moravian church that founded the town in 1756, and neighbors who have known each other for decades. People who retire here rarely want to leave. Their children may live in Manheim Township or Lancaster and work full days, or live out of state and visit once a month. The care they ask us for is concrete: a caregiver who helps Mom shower and dress three mornings a week, who keeps Dad company in the afternoons so he is not alone with his memory loss, or who covers a weekend so the spouse doing the caregiving can rest. Homes and settings in Lititz and Warwick Township

Older adults in Lititz live in three quite different settings. In and around the Moravian historic district, homes are older brick and stone houses and twins close to the sidewalk, often with narrow stairs and bathrooms that were added long after the house was built. Out in Warwick Township, around Rothsville and Brunnerville and along the roads toward Elizabeth and Penn townships, many live in farmhouses or ranch homes on larger lots, sometimes in an in-law apartment beside a son's or daughter's house. And a large number live in the continuing-care and retirement communities in and around the borough.

That last group surprises families. A parent in an independent-living cottage may not need to move to personal care or skilled nursing, but may need help with bathing, laundry, meals or company after a hospital stay. Many communities allow residents to bring in a private home care caregiver; check the community's rules first, then call us, and we will plan visits around the community's own services.

Coming home from UPMC Lititz or Lancaster General

Lititz residents are usually treated at UPMC Lititz on Highlands Drive or at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, about nine miles south along the Lititz Pike, and some go to Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center in East Hempfield Township. The first days home matter most. Our caregiver can meet your parent at home, help them settle, prepare a meal, give medication reminders based on the discharge list, and stay through the night if needed, then help with bathing and get them to follow-up visits later in the week. Skilled nursing and therapy come from the home health agency the physician orders, and we work alongside it. We are independent and not affiliated with UPMC, Penn Medicine or Penn State Health. How care starts in Lititz

  1. Call (717) 695-2704. A care coordinator asks about your parent's day, the house or community they live in, and the hours you need covered.
  2. In-home consultation. Lancaster County is farther from our office than the West Shore, so scheduling can take a little longer than the one to two business days typical around Harrisburg. If a discharge is coming, tell us the date.
  3. Written care plan with the tasks, schedule and preferences, including any rules a retirement community sets.
  4. Caregiver match. We serve Lititz from our Harrisburg office and, when possible, match a caregiver who lives nearby in Lancaster County. Schedules here depend on caregiver availability; regular, longer shifts are easier to staff than a single short visit.
  5. Regular check-ins and on-call support for active clients.

Paying for home care in Lititz

Lititz families most often use private pay or long-term care insurance, sometimes alongside VA benefits or public programs. Medicare does not pay for ongoing non-medical home care.

  • Long-term care insurance. We provide the care plan, daily notes and itemized invoices carriers require.
  • VA benefits for eligible veterans and surviving spouses.
  • Community HealthChoices, the OBRA waiver and Act 150. We are an enrolled provider; your parent can choose any willing and qualified provider.

Who handles OPTIONS and senior services for Lititz residents?
The Lancaster County Office of Aging, the county Area Agency on Aging, at (717) 299-7979. It assesses residents 60 and older for the OPTIONS program and runs caregiver support and other services.
